Coffee Table Book Design

The project was from the course Fundamentals of Graphic Design (Teacher: Martin Lindh & Daniel Linder/ Location: Jönköping University)

Brief: Choose a design-related subject for a coffee table book. This can range from a specific designer, a particular field of design, or a piece of art, either historical or contemporary. Craft a narrative text as if you were an author contributing to a coffee table book on art and design. The text should be engaging and accessible, avoiding an overly academic tone.

Working Process

I chose Hieu Nguyen as the artist for my coffee table book. His art mixes abstract and surreal styles, focusing on themes like femininity and deep emotions. To keep things simple and highlight his work, I used a clean design with a white background and sans serif font. I left enough space so readers can take it in without feeling overwhelmed. The layout of the book follows Nguyen's style – simple and elegant.

Skill learned

For my first InDesign project, I delved into the world of layout design, and the key lesson was all about giving your layout room to breathe. I quickly grasped that a good layout should feel spacious, allowing the content you want to showcase to have its own soul. In other words, it's not just about arranging elements on a page; it's about creating a visual atmosphere that complements and enhances the essence of the content. This understanding became my guiding principle as I navigated through the intricacies of InDesign, ensuring that every element had its place, contributing to an overall design that felt both open and meaningful.
