Music Magazine Deisgn
The project was from the course Visual Communication (Teacher: Martin Lindh & Daniel Linder/ Location: Jönköping University)
Brief: This project involved the creation of a magazine focus on visual communication, encompassing a minimum of 24 pages. The magazine was designed for both print, produced at a print shop, and as an interactive digital PDF version. Emphasizing originality, all text was written by the project team. While the project allowed the use of images and illustrations from other creators, it was essential to ensure the rights to use them, whether through stock images or creative commons licenses. Adherence to copyright rules and intellectual property regulations was emphasized throughout the project, with the goal of producing a visually compelling and legally compliant magazine.
Working Process
In this collaborative group project focusing on music, we collectively produced a 90-page magazine, surpassing the initial requirement of 24 pages. Each team member was assigned a genre to design separately, ensuring consistency in layout across various pages to unite the diverse genres into a cohesive magazine. My chosen genre was Chinese underground rock music, a genre close to my heart.
Throughout my contribution, I meticulously followed a seven-stage process, including inspiration, identification, conceptualisation, exploration/refinement, definition/modelling, communication, and production.
To convey the essence of Chinese underground music visually, I strategically applied colour theory and rhythm in the layout, particularly emphasising black, white, and red to evoke a strong and heavy ambiance. I harnessed the power of MidJourney to craft AI-generated images that perfectly complemented my vision. The key lay in meticulously selecting prompts to ensure the generated images vividly conveyed the essence of my concepts. Through thoughtful prompt choices, I seamlessly aligned the visual elements with the narrative, enhancing the overall impact and design integrity of the magazine.
The exploration and refinement stages played a crucial role in shaping a visually compelling narrative. During the definition and modeling phases, my ideas were transformed into concrete design concepts, which were further refined through collaboration and feedback in the communication stage. The final product showcased not only the creative aspects of the genre but also the logical and disciplined facets, achieved through effective teamwork and communication among all team members.
Skill learned
Throughout this project, I gained valuable insights into effective teamwork. Setting clear guidelines, milestones, and fostering open communication were crucial for maintaining efficiency and ensuring everyone's agreement. Allowing creative freedom within a defined framework facilitated individual contributions, and timely adjustments enhanced overall productivity. The emphasis on documentation proved essential, enabling better coordination and providing a comprehensive record of our collaborative efforts. These lessons in teamwork, communication, and structured workflow will undoubtedly contribute to my future projects, ensuring smoother collaboration and successful outcomes.
